Easter Children’s Outreach (Birmingham): United Kingdom

The purpose of this outreach is to use the opportunities the Easter season brings to present the Christian message to children in schools and churches in the UK. You will be joining OM UK’s Kids ‘n’ Things children’s ministry team for three weeks of outreach with children aged 4-11 years old. In the first two weeks, we will be taking a Christian theatre group into primary schools to perform a 30-minute show called ‘Cracking Easter!’ which clearly explains the Christian message of Easter. The majority of the children who will see the show do not attend church and may have no other opportunity to hear the real message of Easter. In the third week we will be running a four-day children’s holiday club, called ‘Lionheart and the Great Wild West Adventure’, in partnership with a church in North London. This week is one of the church’s main outreaches into their community.

Working in a team of four or five people, you will learn the programmes for the schools show and holiday club. You will take part in puppet songs, stories, action songs and teaching bible verses, plus other elements if you are interested. We hope to have between 10 and 20 performances in schools in various parts of the UK, in which case you can expect to see well over 1000 children during the tour.

The Lionheart holiday club we will be running in the third week is usually attended by 30-50 children, for two hours per day. Most of these children have no regular church contact. We will also take part in a family service and possibly some opportunities in retirement homes too. Each day in the club begins with craft activities and games. The up-front programme includes puppets, drama, conjuring, action songs and so on, leading up to the bible story of the day. Each day's theme links to the next. At the end of each day the children do a "fun sheet" to help them review and respond to what they have learned.

Participant Profile

Experience of working with children, especially in a church context, would be useful but not essential. The main requirements are the ability to relate to children and a desire to help them discover God. You do not need to have used puppets before, as training will be given. You do need to have enough physical mobility to kneel behind a puppet stage, carry some light equipment and take part in lively action songs. During performances you will be involved in various parts of the up-front programme. You will take part in puppet songs and stories as a puppeteer, and help to demonstrate the action songs we use. There may also be opportunities to teach bible verses or bible stories if you have skills in this area. There will also be plenty of time for you to help alongside church members in small group activities, such as making crafts and playing games. OM UK is committed to safeguarding all those we work with, and you will be required to provide the relevant documentation during the application process.

Accommodation

During the practice days you will be staying in our training centre in Halesowen, near Birmingham, with other residents. At our training centre, there are dormitory-style beds available and you do not need to bring any bedding. You do need to bring your own towels and other personal items with you.
During the London holiday club week, accommodation will be provided with church members. Normally there is free time in the afternoons, during which you can relax or visit London.

Food

Food will be provided. We need to know in advance of any special dietary needs (vegetarian, dairy-free, food allergies, gluten-free, etc.).

Travel

The nearest airport is Birmingham International Airport (BHX). You will then take the train to Old Hill Train Station.

Health

You should be in average good health and have sufficient physical mobility to perform in children’s programmes and carry staging and equipment.
You are responsible to obtain appropriate emergency health and medical insurance. If you think this requirement rules you out, talk to us and we will see what adjustments we may be able to make for you.

Visa

If you do not hold an UK or EU passport, this outreach will not be open to you unless you have the right to work or study in the UK. Nationals from the EU and EEA do not require a visa for the UK. We are not able to provide short-term study visas.
