How are your gifts to OM used?

It is often the case that when a person begins the process to join OM, they, their church, family and friends do not always understand why someone volunteering to work in missions must seek to be financially supported in that task.

The person coming on OM is not being "employed" by the movement to do a job. They are voluntarily joining a worldwide movement of other Christians with a similar vision and passion to work towards glorifying God through world missions.

Together we share the responsibility, not only of seeking the expansion of the Kingdom of God, but also for the provision of finance for our particular work. We're not a company, we're a "cause" and every member of OM commits his/her energy, ability, and the finance he/she can raise, to that cause.

Of course many people outside of OM also identify strongly with the work that is done by the movement and make financial sacrifices in order to give as much help as possible. Most of these folks see this ministry of giving as their particular calling and we are grateful to God for this. The gifts provided by these generous Christians outside of OM have always been roughly equal to the general ministry expenses that the movement requires to function. However, outside gifts fall short of providing for the particular living expenses of those working with us.

Because of this, we ask people joining OM to seek God in prayer and ask Him to raise up supporters to give and help cover the living costs they would incur as an individual or family working on OM. These expenses would include, but may not be limited to:

  • housing (rent/mortgage, taxes, utilities, heating, repairs)
  • vehicle (fuel, tax, insurance, repairs)
  • food
  • travel/conferences
  • insurances
  • pensions
  • children's education
  • home assignment and holiday
  • medical and dental
  • postage and telephone
  • study/training
  • OM administration overheads

Raising support is expected of all of us whether we have been on OM for ten days or ten years, whether we are working on the very front line of world missions or in a home office. We are all expected to carry our share of the financial load.

Each OM field is mainly financed through the personal support of each co-worker. The support levels that we set do not fully cover all the costs. We rely on general funding for some of our income. If someone gets more support than the level set for him/her, it should not be assumed that they are "over-supported". We are unable to refund support during a person's time of service with OM or after he/she has left.

More than 95 percent of all gifts to Operation Mobilisation are designated for a person, field or project. The remainder are applied "where needed", usually towards the most compelling "gap in the wall" at the time.

How does one support a person, field or project in OM?

  1. By cheque posted to the OM home office. Cheques can be sent to the home office in any country that has one for anyone in OM, whether they are from that country or not. You need only write a note on the back of the cheque or a separate piece of paper to say for whom the money is designated, your name, title and address.
  2. By setting up an Automatic Payment order with your bank. This is for people who are going to send in a set amount regularly. To help you do this we will send you a letter of explanation and a blank Auto Payment Form to hand in to your bank. We do offer the facility of annual or six-monthly receipts to people on automatic payment. This helps you with your correspondence to the IRD and saves both of us from dealing with a bunch of receipts. When sending money to OM, please remember:

  • We do not operate a separate bank account for each person going on OM. We have one account called "Operation Mobilisation". So cheques must be made out to Operation Mobilisation and not in the person's name that you wish to support. Cheques made out like this have to be returned and altered before we can use them.
  • Instructions in the Automatic Payment Form must be followed to the letter. We have often had difficulty identifying who needs to receive the incoming gift because a supporter fails to ask the bank to put their name, and the name of the missionary they wish to receive the gift, on the AP form. It can take some astute detective work for us to find out who the gift is from and who it is for. This process costs us time & money and is not always successful. Sometimes we only find out when an irate supporter phones after a few months and demands to know why they have had no receipts and why the person they are giving to has not acknowledged the gifts.

How does the support get to the people on the field?

  • At the end of each month all money received during that month and designated to people and projects overseas is sent by SWIFT transfer through our bank to a bank account in Belgium. There it is allocated to the fields where the missionaries who are receiving the support are working. Their Field Leaders then have access to those funds and are able to withdraw them in the currency of their choice to be used for support.
  • At the same time email reports are sent to the bookkeepers in each field stating exactly how much has been given to each person on that field. We also send a "Gift Summary Report" by post, and where possible, by email to the individual recipient of support. This report will list donors, their address, the amount and date of the gift.

What deductions are made from gifts received?

Perhaps the question should be, "Why are deductions made from gifts received?" Reasons are:

  • Home and target field office administration involves the recruitment and support of all people on the field, liaison with their churches and families and the publicity required to keep all supporters and prayer partners informed through newsletters, meetings, videos etc. All this costs money and the sad fact is that home offices in particular do not see the kind of gift income that a more front-line work often generates.
  • More than 15 years ago, target fields, aware that home offices' administration kept them functioning, realised that poor support for home offices was strangling both the home and target offices. They then agreed that home offices would take a maximum of 10 percent in administration fees from every gift that came in. Any reduction in that rate would be dependent on financial stability and the discretion of the home field leadership. We don't deduct any fees from Personal Gifts that come in to cover birthdays, Christmas or other unique expenses.
  • A further 1 percent each would be deducted for the International Coordinating Team that conducts business for all OM fields and the Global Impact Fund that assists all fields to send people on training courses, to conferences and other meetings that benefit all of us. Both of these funds have very little visibility outside of OM, contribute a great deal to the running of the movement and yet generate very few gifts in their own right.
  • A few target fields also make a small deduction for the administration of their people, but this varies considerably within OM.

What are Projects and Fields?

  • A field is a self-governing OM team that could be working within a particular country (New Zealand) or a type of work (Turning Point working amongst Muslims in London). Gifts made to these specific teams are called "Field Gifts" and are used to supplement expenses not covered by personal support or administration fees.
  • A project is an internationally approved expense within a field that is over and above the normal running expenses over a limited time and amount. It could be the expense related to a campaign or a property for instance. New Zealand does not have an approved project at this time.
