Ecuador Earthquake Appeal

On April 16, just as the sun was setting into the Pacific Ocean, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake turned the beauty of the evening into a horrible nightmare along the mid and upper coast of Ecuador.

The earthquake was so violent that it could be felt strongly by OM team members located 600 km to the south of the country. Guayaquil—the largest city in Ecuador situated over 400 km away—lost electricity for most of the night, experienced a collapsing of bridges and a falling of buildings including hospitals. But this was nothing compared to the destruction left near the epicenter. Most of the tall buildings simply crumbled. It’s estimated that 75% of the homes in that area are signi cantly damaged. Fear runs rampant among the people.

Over 500 have died, and yet the smell of death in cities tells us that there more buried in the rubble. Thousands have been injured. With over 40 aftershocks, residents are afraid to return to their homes.

There is an immediate need for food, water, shelter and other basic necessities. Many of the roads have been damaged, limiting the access to smaller communities where OM has relationships with smaller churches. Small teams, like those of OM, can be mobilised to reach these areas more readily than many other NGOs and relief organisations.

OM’s immediate priorities involve providing food, water, tents, tarps and other necessities to the affected communities in Bahía de Caráquez and Perdernales. As the days pass, focus will shift to reconstruction and trauma counselling, where OM has expertise honed over years of working in this type of situation.

Every gift is appreciated. Every gift makes a difference. Please give generously.
